Creative Writing

The purpose of creative writing is to develop the description and suspense that children use in their writing. The focus is on showing the reader instead of telling the reader what is happening. The activities provide children with the opportunity to focus on the feelings, thoughts and emotions of characters instead of just what the character is doing. They also encourage them to keep the reader guessing so that they are engaged and become invested in the story. The activities should be enjoyable as children are able to choose what happens next in the story. Importantly, the activities are supported by examples of creative writing. Furthermore, the activities should show children that topics and themes are open to interpretation. It is not essential but adult direction is recommended for these activities.

Creative Resources

An example of a piece of writing based around the topic is the focus of the first page. Children then need to respond to the text by answering different questions that make them think, predict and connect with the text. These skills will help them to continue writing the text. There are no right or wrong answers in this section, it is all about interpretation and connection. By predicting what will occur next, children will have content to write about.

The second page requires children to comprehend the passage that they have read. The questions are open ended so that children can interpret what the passage meant to them. It is important that they justify their answers using information from the text so that they can see how the writer influenced their answers. Finally, there are two writing tasks. The first task is to continue writing the next two paragraphs of the passage, using similar techniques that were originally used to create description and suspense. The second task is a free writing task based on the original topic.
